Algaida, a village of stories, legends and traditions
Algaida is a traditional rural municipality located in the centre-south of Mallorca, and includes the towns of Algaida, Pina and Randa. It is 22 km from Palma airport.
Pina is a small town that belongs to Algaida. It is known to have been inhabited in ancient times, thanks to talayots and caves found among the archaeological remains. Its main places of interest and monuments are the church of San Cosme and San Damiano, the cross, the convent and the fountain of Pina. The pine fountain forms a harmonious whole under the shade of ivy, elms and poplars. Pina is situated in a valley crossed by a torrent of water coming from Randa and Montuïri, which can be seen from the viewpoint at the end of the village.
On the first Sunday in July, a summer party is held in Pina, known as Rock&Pina, where young people come to enjoy the music.
To the north of Algaida and on the slopes of Puig de Randa, is the town of Randa and the Santuari de Cura, from where we can see practically all of Mallorca, and even Cabrera and Ibiza when the skies are clear. An authentic panoramic viewpoint over Mallorca from Puig de Cura, Randa`s highest point. The Santuari de Cura was the retreat place of the monks for many centuries, and where we now find a museum, a football field and a shop. In addition, there is an excellent restaurant from which to admire the incredible views of the island.
It is usually a destination for cyclists or hikers. In Puig de Randa we can find the Hermitage of Sant Honorat, the Sanctuary of Nostra Senyora de Gràcia and the Sanctuary of Nostra Senyora de Cura.
Algaida is an agricultural and picturesque village, known especially for the blown glass factory Arte Gordiola, owned by the family of the same name. The Ca`n Gordiola factory resembles a castle, and supplied this type of art to the Royal House of Spain and to European noble families.
It is a town with history, as remains of the pre-Talayotic period were found in the caves of Son Reus, and Talayotic in the village of Sa Serra-Punxuat.
Wine producers also live in Algaida, and Can Majoral is the best example. A family business that produces organic wine of great tradition. The popularity of this winery is the annual harvest under the full moon, where 200 volunteers participate in the harvest.
But there`s a party in Algaida too! In January, San Honorat, the patron saint of Algaida, is celebrated, where the devils and "els cossiers" dance through the streets of the village. Els Cossiers is a group of 6 dancers and their dances are accompanied by the sound of fives and drums.
In the centre of Algaida there is also a cycle route, which runs from the village to Castellitx de Pau. In spite of this, the inhabitants of Algaida embark on a walk towards the Church of the sea of Deu de la Pau, carrying, most of the pilgrims, a yellow scarf on their necks.
In addition to festivals and traditions, in Algaida you will be able to enjoy the typical gastronomy of the island, in restaurants known to Mallorcans as Es 4 Vents or Cal Dimoni.
